The piglet arena is a 72”x72” square arena that can be used for behavioral testing of large animals. It is constructed by [insert material] providing a durable container for large animals. It features one access point on each side that can be opened either on a hinge as a door or opened vertically as a guillotine slide door. This allows the experimenter flexible access to the arena for testing and cleaning purposes. The arena flooring is easily removable as it sits on top of 80/20 support beams, allowing the user to specify the type of flooring desired. Additionally, the elevated flooring allows animal feces, urine, and cleaning reagents to drop below the arena, allowing easy cleaning. Each arena features 3 inserts on each wall that provide visual cues for the animal to orient itself. These are protected by a flexible plastic sheet to protect from animal byproducts and water during cleaning. These inserts can be removed or modified to provide custom designed environmental cues. The walls are 4’ high to prevent animals from escaping the arena, while being short enough that the experimenter may see inside. All-inall, the [insert name] is a behavioral arena designed to withstand heavy use by experimenters for behavioral testing of large animals up to approximately 25kg. It has been used extensively by a local research group for the purposes of examining exploratory behavior in piglets.
